Dear WFE Delegates,

On behalf of our colleagues at OCC, the world’s largest equity derivatives clearing organisation, we welcome you to Chicago, or, as some call it, the Windy City. We want to thank WFE Chairman Wu Qing and WFE CEO Nandini Sukumar for giving OCC this opportunity to showcase our great city against the backdrop of what is one of the leading events for the global derivatives industry.

Located on Lake Michigan in Illinois, Chicago is the largest city in the state and the third-most populous city in the United States with over 2.7 million residents. It is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation. O’Hare International Airport is the second-busiest airport in the world when measured by airport traffic, and the region has the largest number of U.S. highways and railroad freight. Our city also has one of the world’s largest and most diversified economies, with no single industry employing more than 14 percent of the workforce.

Aside from this important meeting, our city has so much to offer its guests. Famed for its architecture, Chicago has a skyline punctuated by skyscrapers such as the iconic John Hancock Center, the Willis Tower standing 1,451 feet tall, and the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower located on Michigan Avenue. Chicago also is one of the most visited cities in the U.S., due to its many landmark attractions, including Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the Lincoln Park Zoo. Chicago is home to some of the world’s leading universities, including the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. If you wish to experience Chicago’s culture during your stay, the city offers the visual arts, film, theatre, music and sports.

As we prepare for the 2018 conference, it is clear that many of the issues from the 2017 agenda remain top of mind for exchanges, market participants, and regulators. It is a challenging time for all of us who are in the business of managing risk. We continue to face an evolving regulatory and tax environment that is driven by rapid and constant political, economic and technological change, not only in the U.S. but in financial centres around the world.

The 2018 IOMA conference offers all of us a unique opportunity to share ideas and thought leadership on how to not only address these current challenges, but to also take a look ahead as to what we as an industry might be facing in the coming years. It is a great opportunity to discuss how we can foster growth, innovation and thought leadership across our industry, with the overriding goal of serving market participants and the greater public interest.

We look forward to renewing old acquaintances, and to making new ones, during your stay in Chicago. We welcome you to the Windy City, and we hope that you have a very successful conference.
